We are ready for a new president. Are you? If your answer is yes, keep
reading. If your answer is no, check this out.
For almost our entire young adult lives our country's President has wielded
power in such a way that it has left our generation with significant economic
problems including weak job prospects, unmanageable student loan debt,
and no health care security. The past eight years have taken our country
backwards. Indeed it is a much different climate than when our parents and
grandparents started their adult lives.
Despite the mining of the foundation of our future by the Bush
Administration, we and our peers in the Millennial generation aren't cynical
and apathetic. Quite the contrary. We believe that government can be a
force for good if used properly. Our generation has high rates of
volunteering and civic engagement. Young adults have been coming out of
the woodwork to vote and work for Democratic political campaigns.
We know that it is time to take our country back and Barack Obama is
going to lead the charge.
Rachel and Arshad have never been content to sit back and watch the
world go by. We prefer to be in the thick of things, not only joining the
party, but often starting the party. We are civic entrepreneurs where the
currency is a stronger democracy and community.
Rachel, the youngest member of the Vermont House of Representatives,
decided to run for office knowing that democracy thrives off of diversity and
there were no members of the Millennial generation elected. She is a lead
advocate for issues important to her generation. She has been an avid
anti-war activist and community organizer, personally registering well over
500 people to vote in the last 2 years. As president of the Young
Democrats of Vermont she has led the charge to engage the under 35
crowd with the Democratic Party. (Come to the Young Dem
post-convention party at Stonecutter's Brew house!)
Arshad is the Executive of Democracy for America, the premier
organization founded by Howard Dean that is fighting to take our country
back from the right wing. He works tirelessly to change our country from
the bottom up. He recruits, trains, and supports candidates who win. He is
also the founder and host of the Vermont chapter of Drinking Liberally, a
weekly social event in Burlington where liberal minded folks gather at a pub
and talk politics and swap ideas.
We are both working hard to make this country great once again. We firmly
believe that the key to our generation's ability to prosper lies squarely with
the election in November. We have motivated and registered voters,
encouraged people to think of the political possibilities, and lent our time
and service to Barack Obama's campaign. Young Vermonters
overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama. Send us to Denver to support
Barack Obama and you will reaffirm the hopes of a generation of
Young Vermonters. We are the future. We are now. We are Change.
